A group of 9 insurgents in the northern Kunduz province have renounced violence, officials said.

A spokesman for 303 Pamir Zone in Kunduz told TOLOnews that a group of insurgents including their commander named Hazrat have laid down their arms and joined the Afghan peace process.

"The group surrendered to government in Imam Saheb last night," said Lal Mohammad Ahmadzai, a spokesman for 303 Pamir Zone.

The group was carrying out anti-government activities in Imam Saheb district of Kunduz province.
Local elders are said to have played an important role in mediating between the government and insurgents to encourage anti-government armed groups to embrace the Afghan government's peace call.
